Laos Energy Security (LES) is a part of the U.S. Government’s initiative: “Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy” (CLEAN EDGE Asia). CLEAN EDGE Asia supports expanded access to energy, promotes energy diversification and trade and integration of clean energy markets, and strengthens energy security throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Its goal was to develop a 1,878 MW lignite mine-mouth power plant. What resulted was Laos’s highest-capacity power generator, providing energy for Laos and Thailand. Before the Hongsa Coal Power plant started operation in 2015, Laos’ energy production was coal-free.
The Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest in Laos, was completed in 2019. A more powerful dam on the Mekong River is already in the pipeline. VIENTIANE: With electricity exports to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia and even Singapore, Laos has arguably realised its ambition to be the battery of Southeast Asia.
USAID Laos Energy Security, a five-year activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), supports the Government of Laos (GOL)’ efforts to improve the planning, policies, and performance of the Lao energy sector.
What resulted was Laos’s highest-capacity power generator, providing energy for Laos and Thailand. Before the Hongsa Coal Power plant started operation in 2015, Laos’ energy production was coal-free. After Hongsa started spinning its turbines, coal power generation accounted for one-eighth of Laos’ electricity production.
