The four longer-duration energy storage demonstration projects will help to achieve the UK’s plan for net zero by balancing the intermittency of renewable energy, creating more options for sustainable, low-cost energy storage in the UK.
The Pentir Energy Storage project, to be located near Bangor in Wales, will have a 57MW/228MWh capacity, with a planned 40-year operational lifespan. The project will connect directly to the local grid via the nearby Pentir substation. Lightsource bp has not yet stated when they expect construction to begin or a proposed connection date.
ILI Group has a portfolio of over 4.7GW energy storage projects, including 2.5GW of utility-scale battery storage and 2.5GW pumped storage hydro. In July, the group submitted a Section 36 planning application for a 1.5GW pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) project called Balliemeanoch, with a planned connection date in 2031.
“The recent decision by Scottish Ministers validates the crucial role that battery storage will play in our energy transition. As Scotland continues to increase its renewable energy capacity, projects like Whitehill BESS are essential for providing the flexibility and resilience necessary to maintain secure and reliable energy supplies.”
Energy will be stored as compressed air in the underground cavities at times of surplus, and then released when required to meet system demand – in a low carbon manner and while providing other system benefits, such as grid stability and flexibility services.
e-Zinc is a Toronto-based company with a breakthrough long-duration energy storage technology. The company’s zinc-based energy storage system can be up to 80 percent less expensive than comparable lithium-ion systems for long-duration applications.
With the right project, storage can deliver dual revenue streams from grid services and energy arbitrage. There''s clearly demand from utilities and independent system operators to contract these flexible assets.
