Capacitor banks and harmonic filters are connected in shunt to the system in order to provide reactive power. They can incorporate tuned or detuned reactors to diminish or eliminate the harmonics present in the system. Their main function is keeping the system stability and diminish loses, contributing to improve power system operation efficiency.
The minimum capacitor voltage rating for ungrounded-wye connected capacitor banks is the system’s line-to-neutral voltage. For lower tuned filters, the voltage must be higher.
However, you can’t indiscriminately add power factor correction capacitors to a system without understanding how their presence will affect the system. Vari-able frequency drives (VFDs) for motors, DC power supplies for computers, elec-tronic ballasts for fluorescent lighting, and other non-linear loads can create harmonics.
One way to solve the problem is applying de-tuned harmonic filters or an appropriately sized capacitor to avoid har-monic resonance. Harmonic filters provide the same 60-Hz reactive compensation as capacitors, but they’re typically designed with a parallel resonance point below any expected harmonics on the system.
This overvolt-age and overcurrent includes both the fundamental frequency and any har-monic contributions. The standard also states that the VA rating of the capacitor can’t exceed 135%. Engineers typically recommend pro-tecting a capacitor at 135% of its full load current.
There is a better approach, and that is to break the filter package from the drive/rectifier supplier or electrification packager, create your own filter design and specification, and bid it out to vendors who specialize in harmonic filter design and manufacturing.
