The new batteries got really hot - too hot to touch. What causes this to happen? Batteries can heat up if you have a short circuit. Instead of the electricity going through a circuit where it is used up in various ways or resisted, it just goes straight through the battery, and is then conducted back around into the battery again.
These are both ways of storing energy as heat. While thermal stores are more like your trusty old hot water tank, heat batteries are their cool younger sibling: they’re sleek, small, and hold on to heat for longer. Sunamp UniQ heat batteries are perhaps the most compact example out there.
However, instead of using chemicals to store energy, a heat battery uses a phase change material (PCM) such as sodium acetate or paraffin wax. The PCM is contained within a storage unit that is insulated to reduce heat loss. When excess energy is produced, it is used to heat the PCM, causing it to change from a solid to a liquid state.
This is the MG5 forum and there is an option to turn on the battery heating... You can use it to pre-heat the battery before charging at a rapid charger (no benefit to a fast charger). It will consume an amount of power so make sure you have plenty left and only use it if it's really cold and you need a quicker charge.
Re. battery heating whilst plugged in ... my experience is that (like with cabin pre-heating) the car must be actively charging for battery heating to work whilst plugged in. If the wall box is in standby mode waiting for a signal from the car then battery heating (at least via the app) won't start. Doing some very rough calculations...
Sunamp have tested them over more than 10,000 cycles with no degredation. Because they have minimal heat loss you can charge them at any time during the day, to take advantage of excess solar, cheap rate electricity, low carbon electricity etc. What's not so good about a heat battery? It isn't flexible when compared to storing electricity.
The energy price cap, rising electricity and gas bills and cost of living support are all very much on everyone''s minds currently. The subject of energy, where it comes from and how we can afford ...
