With regard to the off-grid operation, the energy storage system has considerable importance in the microgrid. The ESS mainly provides frequency regulation, backup power and resilience features.
This paper provides a critical review of the existing energy storage technologies, focusing mainly on mature technologies. Their feasibility for microgrids is investigated in terms of cost, technical benefits, cycle life, ease of deployment, energy and power density, cycle life, and operational constraints.
Microgrids play a crucial role in the transition towards a low carbon future. By incorporating renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and advanced control systems, microgrids help to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote the use of clean and sustainable energy sources.
The difference between the two tariffs is revenue to the microgrid, which requires a storage system with deep cycling capacity, a longer lifespan with more cycles, high efficiency, and low self-discharge losses [15, 16].
