Hot temperature discharge rates only vary about 5°F for each battery. Discharging issues aren't as prominent for battery chemistries as they are for charging processes. However, there are things that customers need to be aware of when it comes to battery performance.
Temperature is an important factor affecting the performance of lithium-ion batteries, so it is a key element in the research of battery thermal characteristics and thermal management to clarify the influence of temperature on battery charge and discharge performance.
The batteries have an operating range of -18°C to 55°C, but are recommended to discharge at 20±2°C. Under the optimal temperature conditions and with a 10Ω load, the battery is expected to reach its cutoff voltage defined at 0.9V in 480 minutes. Figure 2 shows the manufacturer's schematic diagram of discharge under these conditions.
The study reaffirms that an increase in the discharge current rate results in an increase in the temperature difference between the core and surface of the cell. Also, a low ambient temperature has a relatively higher adverse impact on the battery performance, given the same discharge current.
The rate at which a battery is discharged can also affect its characteristics. When you discharge a battery at a high rate (i.e., a large current is drawn quickly), its effective capacity can decrease. The reasons behind this are multi-factorial and tied to changes in chemical reactions and impacts tied to the battery's internal resistance.
Therefore, when the battery is discharged at a high rate in a high temperature environment, corresponding heat dissipation measures must be taken, otherwise, the battery will be prone to performance decline, shortened service life and even a dangerous state of thermal runaway due to overheating.
