The current research on power battery life is mainly based on single batteries. As known, the power batteries employed in EVs are composed of several single batteries. When a cell is utilized in groups, the performance of the battery will change from more consistent to more dispersed with the deepening of the degree of application.
The ability to charge and discharge batteries in a matter of seconds rather than hours may make possible new technological applications and induce lifestyle changes. Such changes may first take place in the use of small devices, where the total amount of energy stored is small.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in new energy vehicles because of their high specific capacity, good energy density, and low self-discharge rate. However, they also have various disadvantages, such as the poor durability [1, 2] that the energy and power of lithium-ion batteries will decrease over time.
The accumulated energy potentially can reach a certain percentage (<∼20%) of the maximum energy of a rechargeable battery at the end of its lifetime if no voltage decrease is assumed when the battery capacity reaches 80% of the initial maximum capacity.
Here we show that batteries 4, 5 which obtain high energy density by storing charge in the bulk of a material can also achieve ultrahigh discharge rates, comparable to those of supercapacitors.
Ning et al. studied the battery capacity loss at different discharge rates (1–3C) and found that the largest battery internal resistance could be achieved at the 3C discharge rate, and the capacity loss is proportional to the discharge rate.
