Singapore-based developer Vena Energy has announced it will investigate opportunities to manufacture solar panel components and battery energy storage systems in Indonesia to support a hybrid megaproject featuring up to 2 GW of solar capacity and more than 8 GWh of energy storage.
However, given the challenge of Indonesia’s geological landscape, with many off-grid and remote areas, there is growing intermittency issue that hamper the development of solar and wind generation. Hence, the battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies have a critical role in the development of Indonesia’s renewable energy.
Subsidiaries of PLN involved in the Battery Energy Storage System project happen to be the primary electricity providers in Indonesia, such as PT Indonesia Power, PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali, and others. The plan to develop an energy storage system aligns with the positive growth in the renewable energy industry.
From pv magazine Australia Vena Energy says it will collaborate with China's Suntech, battery cell producer REPT Battero, and US energy platform Powin to develop an integrated production line for solar panel and energy storage system components in Indonesia.
Although, there is no policy mandating the installation of energy storage in solar or wind projects in Indonesia, the abundance of solar and wind resources in Indonesia’s archipelago and increased potential demand across industries indicate that BESS demand is poised to grow substantially in the near future.
Vena Energy, which has commissioned 114 MW of solar and onshore wind projects in Indonesia, said the Batam solar power plant will have a capacity of up to 2 GW and will be coupled with battery systems with a potential storage capacity of more than 8 GWh.
