What is potting in electronics?

In electronics, potting is the process of filling a complete electronic assembly with a solid or gelatinous compound. This is done to exclude water, moisture, or corrosive agents, to increase resistance to shocks and vibrations, or to prevent gaseous phenomena such as corona discharge in high-voltage assemblies.

What is the potting process?

In the potting process, an electronic assembly is placed inside a mold (the "pot" ) which is then filled with an insulating liquid compound that hardens, permanently protecting the assembly. The mold may be part of the finished article and may provide shielding or heat dissipating functions in addition to acting as a mold.

How do you use a Potting Machine?

Pour the potting material into the mixing container and then carefully pour it onto the PCB or component, making sure to cover all the sensitive parts. Use a potting machine, if available, to ensure accurate and consistent potting.

How do you put potting material on a PCB?

Use a vacuum chamber to remove any air bubbles from the potting material before applying it to the PCB or component, if necessary. Pour the potting material into the mixing container and then carefully pour it onto the PCB or component, making sure to cover all the sensitive parts.

How are ftcap capacitors encapsulated?

To function reliably over their entire service life, FTCAP’s film capacitors is encapsulated are vacuum with an epoxy. Photo courtesy Scheugenpflug. During the “schoopage” process, the film ends of the coil protruding at the sides are electrically contacted by means of spray metallization. Tin, zinc and aluminum are used as contact materials.

What is a vacuum potting system?

Scheugenpflug’s vacuum potting system ensures quality encapsulation of high-voltage capacitors for medical devices. High-voltage capacitors are used in medical technology, such as, CT scanners, X-ray machines or magnetic resonance tomographs. Photo courtesy Scheugenpflug
